tball season for my babies

WARNING: Proud mama moment about to occur!! We have had the best season in T-Ball. My kids have absolutely loved it! I've even had a blast helping out on the field. I'm sure that anyone attending the games will remember Mac when you see his picture. He was the one making dirt angels, running after the ball after he hit it, and running to third instead of first. He, for sure, provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd in the stands. I'm so proud of both of them!!!

During this session, all Kaden wanted was a snack. He wanted nothing to do with mommy's belly. Every time we lifted Rose's shirt, he pulled it back down. Creativity had to kick in for this one. I hope to see baby this weekend!! I hope this makes these last few days a little easier.

I just want to take time to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our friends and family. Sophiemac Photography has looked a little different this year because I decided to go back to work and also take graduate classes full time as well. I am so bad at not taking my babies pictures like I should so when Mac's big 0-3 hit, I decided that I will get his 3 year pictures regardless. A month later, here they are. Better late than never. I literally put my camera in my car and waited for both of my kids to be halfway clean. Here's my little angels.

Nothin says 3 like a good melt down. For some reason, he thought there was a llama in this abandoned building. He cried when we couldn't get in to go see it. Don't ask. I honestly don't know. Maybe one to many Llama Llama books at bedtime.

Ok, ok. I know it's been an extremely long time since my last post. I hate to even go down the busy road because I know that everyone is just as busy as the next, but here goes. Yes, I've been taking pictures. No, I haven't been blogging them. Yes, I am taking 9 hours of graduate classes this fall term. Yes, I am training for Reading Recovery this year. Yes, I am teaching the literacy block to third graders. Yes, I am addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse series and stay up until 1 and 2 o'clock just to finish a book. Ok, that last one is optional but I really am addicted. Anyway, here I am making up for lost time. I am getting ready to update starting with Mr. Rylan. Here are a few of his birthday shots. Thanks Amber and Allen for trusting me with his entire first year of pictures. I'm so glad that we had so much fun wading through puddles, crying in the leaves, and posing in that red chair!

Meet Maggie. She always comes in my classroom for Hershey's Kisses. I'd like to think it's because I'm the coolest teacher in the world, but I just know better. Mommy wanted some shots and quite honestly when you're this cute, you just can't mess them up so I agreed! She looks like a princess and man can the princess work it! In Sophia's eyes, Hannah is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Since she was little, the only memory I have of Hannah is singing and dancing. Seriously, her life is a musical. When she uses the bathroom, she has a song for it. When she eats, there's a song for that. When she's doing her homework....you guessed it. These were her dance recital pictures. Of course she hammed it up as usual! Like the title says, you'll see her on stage in Hollywood one day.

It's been a crazy January and February. It's usually really slow during these months. The truth is that I was really looking forward to some down time with pictures so I could catch up on a few backordered pictures that I have been working on and school. But things have been really steady here lately.

I'd like to introduce you to some of my close friends who are running for public office. I recently took some pictures of Mr. K downtown. We ran right into his nap time so we decided to do a mini shoot at the tracks to get the smiles and outfits we wanted. Everything worked out great except for the weather. I should have put a picture on here with this family all cozied up in the snuggli. My hands were aching it was so cold.

I hope these pictures were worth the wait and worth battling the cold. Thanks for being so patient during our move.

I know that there isn't a lot of difference between these first two shots, but I liked them both so much.

So I missed my new point and shoot camera during the snow. I looked for it every where and there wasn't any way that I was getting my big mama out while all the sledding was taking place. I finally convinced myself that I had left it in my classroom. While I have no snow pictures to post, I did however stumble across my camera this evening in Sophia's room and here are a few pictures that I found. ENJOY!

I'd love to introduce Mr. T. Isn't he just the cutest little hairy thing you've even seen? I honestly thought that Sophia was the hairiest baby ever, but baby T. has officially put her to shame. I really don't even consider this a session. Rob, the kids and myself went to introduce ourself to him and I just happened to have my camera :) That was Natalie's only request. My only request after labor was sweet tea. I guess that's why I looked like a beached whale too.

Thanks so much for letting me snuggle with your little man. I'm sure Mac can and will teach him a few things in a year or two. I love you guys. Keep a look out for his newborn session coming soon!

They blow the normal Valentines cards out the window! These are perfect this year for her preschool class. An order of 24 is 20.00. This doesn't include a session fee but I am offering a chance to use past pictures (within the past 6 months) to save a little money for you. I've known Amanda for many years. We go way back into the chorus days :) I'm not into the business of asking people to do their pictures. But I did ask Amanda if I could bless her and her family with a picture session. You see, Ben, her husband was born with a congenital heart defect. During the time of these pictures, he was on the heart transplant list. Things were not looking too good for him and I wanted Amanda and her children to have the ability to freeze time and have something to hold on to. However, God has totally moved in Ben's life and things are looking so much better now. Ben has actually started a ministry talking about his life and his healing.

I'm still here. I went back to teaching. I know, I know but It just felt like what I was supposed to do right now. I am still taking pictures and I am currently scheduling for October. healing for baby Abby

Meet Ms. Abby. I took pictures of her and her family a month or so back. I received an email from Abby's aunt yesterday asking me to please help her pray and help get the word out about Abby's health. Abby is severely anemic to the point of almost being hospitalized for a blood transfusion. The Doctors don't really know what's going on but the possibility of a blood disease or cancer haven't been ruled out. She's going for more tests today so please stand with this family in believing for complete healing for Abby.

Meet Mark and Beth. Their wedding was at Magnolia Manor in Lenoir City. I had never been there but was blown away when Robert and I arrived. It was an old mansion that had indescribable charm and character. And to top it off, it was run by two Clinton gals. How much better can it get for a Campbell County gal?

This is my braggin' right. I was determined to find me an old chair during the 127 yard sale this year. It was at the top of my list. The only requirement was that it had to be gold, red or some type of purple. I stumbled across this chair, although not exactly what I had in mind, and left feeling rather satisfied. I paid $25.00 for this jewel. I was so excited! You'll be seeing this red chair quite a bit. Here's some pictures of my babies. I was so happy to just get 15 minutes with them. That never happens.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Matilda Jane clothes. Sophia has been wearing them for about 3 years now. I've never had a party because the closest rep lived in Nashville and I just couldn't find it in myself to ask her to drive two hours to just to satisfy my whim. But, I finally caved and I am having a Matilda Jane party September 17th from 5:00 until 7:00.

I had the opportunity to work with our good friend Cory and his absolutely gorgeous fiance' Danielle. Cory is the drummer for Standing Small. Google them. It's worth your time. They are an awesome christian band who are totally 100% living the word. Ok, enough advertisement. On to the wedding.

Danielle had a candy bar for her guests. All the candy was yellow and individually wrapped. Such a relief to germ-a-phobes. It was such a cute idea! I couldn't pass up some lemon heads.

Since my baby girl is going to preschool this year, I've been trying to spend individual time with both my children. It's just something that I've slacked in this past year. But anyway, we ended up going to Atlanta to American Girl for our special day together. Angela and Hannah decided to join us and we had a blast together. Here's a few...well quite a bit of pictures.

Can you see the resemblance between Clarissa and Sophia? I mean, it's been there since birth. It's just that since she's getting older, she just looks more and more like her mommy.

Let's just say that I budgeted this trip and I was about 150.00 over budget just at this store alone. I can't go to Atlanta without making a stop at Nordstroms. I love you Nordstroms. I promise I won't stay away so long next time.

I had a picture of Sophia holding up my credit card and I actually had it right here below this comment you're reading now. However I considered the amount of abuse it had just been through was enough that it didn't need any extra help from thieves over the internet. Oh well. Just picture the smallest little fingers gripping a smoking green bank card with a devilish little grin and you've got the picture. Thank you common sense for kicking in.

I laughed until I peed my pants when I saw Sophia's stroller weaving through the isles at American Girl. It was a miniature version of me! Two kids buckled up with clothes and items to buy piled all the way around them. I'm glad Dave Ramsey was no where around lol...or Robert for that fact.

Do any of you have that couple who you just can't get enough of? Those really good friends who will always have a place in your heart? Meet Daniel and Amber. Every time I'm around them, I laugh so hard my side hurts for days. I'm talkin about the snortin', laugh like no body's watchin hee hawin. But it's always over the most stupid things that I'm betting no one else would find funny. I guess we just have that comedic connection. ANY WAY!

I got to shoot their maternity session and I was so happy! We had such a good time. Here's a few shots from the session.

I've been wanting to do a shadow shot for a while. It didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it, but it works.

Starting a Photography Business

Photographers: I am more than happy for you to share this page with anyone you wish, and you are also welcome to link to it and share its content on your websites. In doing so, I ask that you include the link back to this page with credit to Shannon Holden Photography as the author. Thank you very much.

I get several emails and phone calls each month from aspiring photographers looking for advice. Maybe they are just launching out on their own, or perhaps they are looking for employment as an assistant or intern with an established photographer. I am honored by their requests and inquiries, and I am flattered that anyone would look to me as a mentor in business or art. At this point in time, I am simply unable to devote as much time as I’d like to such requests, so I thought it might be helpful to share some information here to answer some of the questions. Most of the information here will apply to business as a Children and Family Portrait Photographer, as opposed to Weddings or Commercial endeavors.

A photography career can be truly fulfilling. It is a joy to work with new families, capturing lifelong memories with them, and looking forward to new ones as their babies and children grow. But as you launch into the professional realm, it is incredibly important to be thoughtful and realistic about the road ahead. Your favorite photographer may make her job look easy, but trust me … it’s not. A successful photographer devotes long hours and a tremendous amount of energy to her craft, and the journey to success is not a short, lighthearted trip.

There are a few things that I think are critical for any photographer hoping to build a business around their passion. Some of these things can be a little sensitive to talk about, but you asked!

Technical Skill

The first is simple and obvious … know your craft and your tools. I do not believe in the “Fake it til you make it” approach. I believe you should be honest with yourself and your potential clients as you grow and learn, and have faith that one day you will be where you want to be. Especially with location photography, you are going to find yourself in a huge variety of settings and situations. You might end up shooting in a house with no light to be found. Or maybe you will be shooting 4 year old triplets with dirty clothes and a sugar high. You might be standing in the rain racing to get that one last shot before the downpour really starts. (Yes, I’ve done all three of these.) The variables in this business can really cause some stress during a session. The elements you can control in the midst of chaos – your mastery of your camera, your ability to find and manipulate light properly, and your own creative vision – will be the keys to your success. That’s not to say every session will be stressful. But there will be a few, and you will want to come through those smiling just like the non-stressful ones.

Know your camera, your light modifiers, your lenses, and your photo editing software. Know them like the back of your hand. Know what Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO means, and how they work together. Know which lens and f/stop to use to achieve that beautiful background blur, and know what f/stop is best to keep multiple subjects in focus at the same time. Know how the focal length of your lens relates to your shutter speed. Most professional photographers shoot fully manual with their cameras, except perhaps auto-focus. I strongly recommend manual shooting. You must know how to set your camera to capture a scene, and how to reach those settings very, very quickly, before your adorable little subject toddles off to the next adventure.

Business Knowledge

The second is probably the most critical … be a business person. Any successful photographer (not the starving artist, but the photographer who can actually afford to pay their bills and still pay themselves, too) will tell you that success in this industry is 20% talent and 80% business skills. You absolutely must understand what it takes to run a business and do so legally. Be prepared for the money and time required. Even if you are planning your business to be a small, secondary job, you will probably be surprised at the amount of time you will pour into it. Your cost of doing business is not just your camera and your prints. Your business time is not just your time behind the camera. Consider all these additional and important expenses (and more that I haven’t even listed here):

* Back up cameras and lenses. Ideally, you should have at least two of everything you might need during a shoot. And plan on upgrades yearly. I typically replace my cameras once per year. I have invested close to $40,000 in equipment in the first few years of my business. You’ll probably need twice that if you plan to shoot weddings. And that doesn’t even include studio lighting and equipment, since I don’t shoot with those things. Add another $20-30K if you plan to shoot in a studio environment. And that is also not including money to be spent on props.
* Business registrations, city occupational taxes, sales tax, etc. You must understand how to file all of these, how to stay up to date, and budget to pay them.
* Professional services. Budget for consultations with legal and accounting professionals, especially as you are getting your business and policies established. You’ll want to work with a professional accountant at least once or twice per year in addition to tax time, to keep yourself on track.
* Insurance. You MUST protect yourself and your clients, not to mention your equipment. Plan on about $500-$2000 annually for property, liability, and other business insurance. I also carry a short-term disability policy in case I am unable to work for more than 3 months.
* Computer expenses. Like cameras, I upgrade my computers annually. I have two computers, two monitors, and a bunch of other little gadgets that help me run my business. Time is money, and a slow, unreliable computer will eat up your profits quicker than you can imagine. Losing a client’s images to a faulty computer will be your worst nightmare.
* Education. Unless you are Ansel Adams or Anne Geddes, you will probably have a wealth to learn about photography even after your business is well off the ground. I know I do! Attending workshops and conventions, joining professional organizations and forums, taking classes, buying books, subscribing to magazines … these are all business expenses and time investments you should plan for.
* Marketing. You need a way to help people find out about you. Maybe it is print advertisements, maybe it is direct mail, maybe web marketing. Even word of mouth marketing costs money and time.

Along with all these and other expenses, you need to get paid! How much is your time worth? And not just your shooting time … your driving time, your editing time, your ordering and packaging time, your bookkeeping time, etc. After my first year in business, when I was charging $25 for an 8×10 and a $75 session fee, I thought I was doing pretty well. Then with a trusted business adviser, I did a little math. In that first year, I made, on average, $4 to $6 per hour for my time. BEFORE taxes! With some sessions, I actually lost money. OUCH!! I was paying my babysitter more than I made for myself! And so, while it was hard to raise my prices after that first year, and hard to lose some of the clients who could no longer afford my work, clients whom I liked very much personally, it was necessary. I had to either price myself so I could earn a decent salary or I had to shut down my business.

Respect your Fellow Photographer

This business will offer a lot of competition, some of it friendly, some of it not. Some colleagues you meet may have been burned by a competitor, so don’t be surprised if they seem a bit guarded. Most photographers I know would love to offer insight and knowledge to an aspiring artist, but it can be very challenging to do so. Many, like me, are working parents, working very hard to maintain a delicate balance between career and family. As a business owner, our free time is so precious, and we usually want to save it for our spouses and kids. So while we would love to answer a question or two when we can, often the questions we get require a lot of time to address, time we simply don’t have to spare. For this reason, I highly recommend finding an online community, where most of the answers you seek are often being discussed at length, and you can find multiple perspectives on your topic.

Operate with Integrity. Realize in a business like this, your prices and policies affect the market as a whole. Research your competition in an honest way. Don’t call them pretending to be a potential client just so they will send you their rate sheet, and don’t hire them for a session just so you can learn their posing and location ideas. Most of the information you need is out there on the web. Gather it, analyze it, and learn from it.

As a custom photographer, you are not competing with the inexpensive chain studios, so don’t price like them. You are offering a much more refined service, with 500% more time involved. Factor that into your rates. If your market’s average price for a session is $200, and an 8×10 print is $60, don’t price yours at $75 and $20 to build your business, or even because you are “just starting out.” Doing so undercuts established photographers and hurts the industry … it makes it harder for all photographers to earn a living. One day, perhaps soon, you will be among the photographers priced at the average rate, and you’ll understand how frustrating it is to the see the quality of the market declining. And what is sad for the clients, is that the quality of the art declines with it.

If you feel you aren’t ready to charge the average market price, either take more time to develop your skill, or consider offering an “introductory rate.” Set your rate at the average, and offer a “50% Portfolio Building Discount” for a limited time, with a defined end date. You are doing yourself a favor in this point, but not cutting your future earning potential. Your clients will know that you are in a stage of career development (and again, I believe in honesty on this point), and they will understand when the special pricing ends later. You can then avoid the painful process of doubling your prices one day when you realize you can’t meet your business’ budget needs.

If you choose to seek a photography mentor, look outside your area. If you live 6 miles from your favorite photographer, they probably aren’t going to feel comfortable training you to be their future direct competition. Know that this isn’t personal, it’s just wise business on their part. Instead, talk to photographers in nearby markets, perhaps 30-40 miles away, or even pair with someone online who works in another city. Once you are established, building networks and friendships with other local photographers can be great. By then you are on an even playing field, so the doors to relationship will be much easier to open, and chances are that your colleagues will welcome your acquaintance.

Artistic Development

Lastly, be YOU. Find out who you are as a person, as a wife or a friend or a mother or a child of God. That will be one of the first steps to finding your voice as an artist. And in doing so, make sure it is YOUR voice, and not a copy of another artist you admire. Inspiration is a wonderful thing … let it be the launching pad for YOUR art, not the foundation for art you lay as a thin veneer over it. Let new ideas from other artists feed your creativity, but don’t let them bog you down in trying to keep up with all the latest trends.

Plan time into your schedule, a LOT of time in the early days, to just shoot. This goes along with Technical Knowledge as well. Make hundreds or even thousands of photographs. Analyze them to find ways you can improve them. Join that Photography club or online forum where you can share your work for constructive criticism and feedback. Keep up this habit through the years to keep your skills honed and your perspective fresh.

Be honest, be bold, be genuine, be loving, and be humble. Your clients will appreciate you more for it.

I recently took some family pictures at my friend's farm. She has so many animals and refers to her horses as her babies. I had 2 - 3 minutes while the family was changing clothes to try and wrangle one horse in and get my camera set and snap the picture. Let's just say that the horse didn't want to cooperate. Once he found out my camera wasn't food, he was out of there. Anyway, here's one Amanda.

They say that beauty comes from the inside out and that it so true of my friend Hope. This past December, Hope was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to undergo a double mastectomy and is still going through the final stages of chemotherapy. But you would never know it by looking at her. She said the reason she wanted to do this session is to be able to have something to look back on and help her count her blessings. I am so honored that I was the one who got to take these pictures for Hope and her girls. I also hope her bravery inspires others to step out. I love you Hope, Addie, Lexie, and Anna!

I'm not afraid of the dark

I've been trying to experiment more with light and shadow. I fear it like the plague and cringe every time I even think I suspect it in my pictures. But I totally didn't understand that it could be used to my benefit until recently. I had to share this picture because it's strait out of my camera. No editing and no studio lighting was used. The only thing I used was my camera, a flash, and a mirror to bounce the light off of. I have to admit that I'm a little proud of it so that's why I had to show it off. I met Shannon a few months ago and just fell in love with her immediately. She's such a blast to be around and she makes everyone smile no matter what! So her senior session at Cumberland Gap was no exception. It's been a while (8 years exactly) since I've been up there and it was so quaint and charming! It reminded me of Mayberry.

hair cuts for everyone!

Today we went to studio visage and got our first hair cuts. Sophia has had her hair cut before but it was just to trim some edges off. Today we had a major cut.....a big girl cut! Sophia went first and wanted the girl to dye it pink. Mac was after her and let's just say we were giving him everything on her station to keep him in that chair. He refused to wear the cape but we finally found something he enjoyed.

Please excuse the quality because our appointment was at 2:00 today. The exact time the storm blew through Knoxville. We were rerouted because of a flood. I wasn't about to get the camera out in that weather. I took them with my camera phone. I'm really gonna have to get me a point and shoot. Can someone tell me how to rotate a picture on a camera phone? I'm sorry for the knot in your neck as you look at this first one.

I can honestly say that I've never taken so many pictures in one day in my life! I had to buy a hard drive so I wouldn't crash my computer! (Well, I've actually been needing one for a while now) But we were victorious and finished all the pictures around 6:00 that evening. Imagine Dance Studio recital is Saturday at 2:30 and Sunday at 3:30 at Campbell County High School. Everyone has worked extremely hard and put so much effort into making this a great show. The Wallen family came to me a few weeks ago wanting some shots of their brothers and sisters to surprise their mom for her birthday. I know this is a week late, but we've been camping for a week so I've taken a break from the editing and picture taking and been focusing on the business side. Because of that, I've had to put off posting this blog.

There are some people who come into your life who will always be those special people no matter the distance between, the years that pass or the new people who may take priority. The class of 2009 are just these special people to me. I want you guys to know that I love you more than life itself. Each of you have changed my life in so many ways, so many different times. I consider each of you my own. It's really bitter sweet for me because I know that it's time to let you go and allow you to become your own person that God has designed for you to be. I know that I have to trust in His plan and take a back seat as a spectator. But I want to hold on to each of you and keep you to myself. I want to shelter you and keep away the hurts and upsets that are coming your way but I know that's not the plan.

I've been praying that God would give me direction in what to say to you. And I keep getting one thing - Go for it. Don't sit on the sidelines and live with regret. Take advantage of every opportunity. Dance to every beat that is made. Sing to every song that's been sung. Don't live a life of fear and what if. Live. Stand up for what you believe in. One person can make a difference and that one person is each of you.

I am honored to know you and call each of you friend. Each of you make Campbell County a better place to live. I love you guys so much. Always remember that you have a place in my heart forever. I love you.

My wonderful husband who is the best husband in the world got me another NICE camera and lens for mother's day. I've wanted to brag on him for a while but I've been so busy using it, I haven't had time. I actually took the week off to camp so now is the perfect time. Daddy starts his radiation friday. Please pray for him because I know that he is afraid of the unknown. He was supposed to start last week, but he had to have another place cut off of his face. It wasn't merkel cell, but it was cancerous. He's doing ok with that but please remember him friday.

I know I've been saying this quite a bit here lately, but I really mean it. Thank you to everyone who keeps up with my blog and keeps us in your prayers. I really do love you more than you ever know!

Can I get a big "AAAAAAWWWWWW"? All I can say is it's not a good idea for me to be shooting infant shots because it gives me baby fever. Isn't he the most precious thing you've ever seen? I had such a good time shooting these pictures. Thank you mom and dad for letting me come into your house and sneak a few shots of your brand new world. I can't wait to shoot outside tomorrow!

Here's a new good thing that I stumbled across. www.shabbyblogs.com. I am convinced that Megan is the nicest gal I've come across in a LONG time. I wondered to her site a few days ago and fell in love with her designs. I wanted them all! And the good new is, I can get them all because everything they load is free! That's right, free! And if that wasn't generous enough, I asked her to make me a button and asked her to email me the price. She quickly emailed me back and made it for free as well!
